Real Dog Publishing
Welcome to Real Dog Publishing. This site was born out of my love for dogs and from an unexpected tragedy that occurred a few years ago.
Phoebe and I thank you for your interest.
How I Became A Real Dog by Frances Smith (and her dog Phoebe) is a heart-wrenching, yet heart-warming story based on how Phoebe survived several years in a puppy-mill. She was then rescued and transitioned into the home of a very loving family (with Frances), therefore learning how to become a "real dog".

Thank you for donating a copy of your book to Yorkie911 Rescue. I just finished reading it and have to say you brought tears to my eyes several times - first when you speak about "The Gloves" and then at the end because of your happy ending!
Your book is such a wonderful way to explain the life of a puppymill dog. Please continue to educate people - children and adults can benefit from reading your story.

I just wanted to write and say how much I appreciate Phoebe's book. I'm also a teacher and writer but it's difficult to explain puppy mills to my children, ages 4 and 7. Many times they've asked to buy treats and toys at the local pet shop. They don't understand why we only shop at our local Petco, perhaps because I was pretty vague in explaining that we support rescues (my firstborn is a shelter lab/chow mix). I didn't know how to explain what goes on in puppy mills, but your book did it perfectly. I read How I Became a Real Dog to my little one last night and she seemed to understand it and sympathize completely. If you need any help as far as positive reviews or if you want to post my email on your site, please ket me know.
Congrats on a great book and best of luck to little Phoebe, although it looks like she no longer needs it!
Hi Phoebe. My students and I LOVE your book. The best part is all the cute pictures of you and your furry friends. A real compliment to you is that the children beg for me to READ IT AGAIN!!! That is a true success for you. I love YOU and your mom!! - Mrs. Weis first grade teacher BSSC
Just got the book in the mail and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! I sobbed reading it the first time and managed to keep it together the 2nd read with my 3 1/2 year old son. Thank you for making such a book possible! - K. Workman
